I was a dental hygienist. The practice used scented cleaning products, air fresheners in the reception, and every patient came in wearing something. Perfume, aftershave, scented lotion. I breathed other people’s chemicals six inches from their mouths for 20 years. My body finally said enough. The progression was slow — occasional headaches became daily headaches became migraines became ‘I can’t leave my house.’ It took 6 years from first symptom to disability. Everything I loved about my job — helping people, conversation, using my hands — was taken by the very chemicals those people wore.
My house is fragrance-free down to the molecular level. I can tell if someone wearing scented laundry detergent walked through my yard. My daughter visits but has to shower at my house and change into clothes I keep here before she can come inside.
My dentist — of all people — was the first one who believed me. He’d seen it in other hygienists. He told me ‘occupational exposure in dental is an open secret nobody talks about.’ My PCP eventually came around after I documented two years of symptom-trigger correlations.
