Founding Story

This is a Founding Story — built from real canary experience patterns. Read how our stories work →

My company moved to a newly renovated office in 2019. Glass, concrete, synthetic carpet, fresh paint — the ‘modern workspace.’ I couldn’t think. Headaches every day by lunch. I thought the coffee machine was broken and I was caffeinated wrong. Then I realized weekends I felt fine. Mondays the fog came back. I asked for a different floor. No dice. I negotiated full remote work, which saved my career, but now I react to new furniture, new electronics, new anything. I buy everything secondhand and let it off-gas in the garage for weeks.

My flat works because I’ve replaced everything over three years. Solid wood furniture, zero synthetic carpet, VOC-free paint. It’s like living in 1950. My friends think it’s an aesthetic choice. It’s survival.

German doctors were slightly better than what I read about in the US. My Hausarzt referred me to an Umweltmediziner (environmental medicine doctor) and the diagnosis was straightforward. But there’s no treatment covered by insurance. They said ‘meiden Sie die Ausloeser’ — avoid your triggers. That was the entire plan.

This is a personal experience, not medical advice. ImACanary.com makes no causation claims.

Stay with the flock.
