I taught third grade for twenty-two years. The building was renovated in one summer and by October I had a cough that never stopped and headaches that arrived at the same time each day. Twelve other staff reported symptoms. The district ran an air quality test, found nothing actionable, and that was the end of the institutional response. Four of us left within two years. I am the only one who has kept pushing and I sometimes wonder whether the other three are healthier for having let it go, and whether being right was worth what it cost me.
