I am sixty-eight and I have been reacting to things since I was in my twenties, which means I did four decades of this before the vocabulary existed. In 1984 they called it nerves. In 1996 they called it perimenopause. In 2011 a young doctor said mast cells and I had to ask her to write it down because I had never heard the phrase. Forty years. I am not bitter about the years, I am bitter that my daughter started showing the same signs at twenty-six and I could at least hand her the words.
